You may have heard your mother through the years warn you with the words, “expect the unexpected”. Your mother, even though wise advice, probably was not referring specifically to debt, credit and home ownership events. The following little things we do in those particular categories will turn back on us with unexpected results.
Skipping out on an overdue book at the library can hurt more than your book borrowing privileges. It actually can impact your credit score in a negative way, the same as those pesky parking tickets stuck to the windshield of your car. Perhaps, you move out and don’t pay the garbage collection company, or pay a cell phone bill. There are many businesses who don’t normally report your timely good credit to a credit bureau, but when you stiff them, they will turn it over to a collection agency.
Collection agencies love to report past due amounts, and it will turn on you when least expecting it. Disputes of course can be made to the bureau, but again, it is time consuming and takes skill in getting these items off your report, in the meantime you having a lower score=higher cost.
A landlord is another a person that normally does not pay to submit information about your timely payments into the bureaus. But, move out in the middle of the night without notice or payment and make him mad and he will pay to make sure you don’t do this again and if so, you will suffer the consequences of having a lower credit score. A lower credit score to a landlord means to you a higher deposit, IF you are accepted at all. If it is a commercial apartment complex, they too don’t report good info, but will report any late pays. In addition to their reporting, they will sell off your debt to a third party creditor who will also show up in your face and credit report.
Then the light comes on and you decide to be responsible and buy a home. Now you have to deal with your past bad decisions. A lower score can cost you thousands of dollars over the life of a large purchase such as a home. Be smart and pay as you go what you owe, because it will turn on you just like the leaves in the fall. But, I promise you, this event will not be as pretty a result as the fall leaves. Take positive actions.
