New Vitamin C Products Reduce the Effects of Sun Damage and Aging

Vitamin C is one of the relatively few topical agents whose effectiveness against wrinkles and fine lines is backed by a fair amount of reliable scientific evidence. Supportive evidence began in 1992, when a paper published by Dr. Sheldon Pinnell from Duke University showed that L-ascorbic acid (a form of vitamin C) reduced UVB damage when applied to the backs of hairless pigs.

More than 90% of the skin damage that we attribute to aging is the result of sun damage. Medical studies have demonstrated that much of this damage can be reversed and cells can be protected to help prevent further signs of aging through the use of Vitamin C. That is because Vitamin C is key to the production of collagen, a protein that aids in the growth of cells and blood vessels and gives skin its firmness and strength, as well as helping skin repair itself. Research suggests that, in addition to improving the appearance of the skin, Vitamin C may prevent the consequences of long-term sun exposure, which can lead to skin cancer. This doesn’t mean that you should apply vitamin C and then risk overexposure to the sun, but if the damage has already been done, there is hope for reversing it.

There are now topical Vitamin C products on the market to take advantage of the restorative properties of this powerful antioxidant. When applied topically, the benefits of Vitamin C are:

· Potent antioxidant, particularly in regard to protecting skin cells from UV-induced damage

· Promotes collagen, giving skin its definition, fullness, and helping skin bounce back

· Improves the appearance of sun-damaged skin by strengthening skin’s repair mechanisms

· Enhances the effectiveness of dermatologist-performed procedures such as peels and microdermabrasion.

An amazing new product on the market that takes advantage of this research is Mary Kay’s TimeWise Replenishing Serum + C. The serum not only contains natural sources of vitamin C to take advantage of the benefits reported above, but it also contains ingredients known to support elastin, which gives skin its elasticity or “spring.” An in-depth consumer study of women who have used the product reported:

· 89% said that their skin looked lifted and more resilient

· 86% said that their skin looked more toned

· 79% said that their skin looked younger

· 90% said that their skin looked enhanced
