V.P.(formerly known as Vick’s Picks) "Are You There ?"

My last 2 articles had to do with taking control of your lighting through dimmers. Now, I’d like to introduce you to another way of taking control by installing occupancy sensors. There are several types of occupancy sensors available. The ones I will be showcasing here are manufactured by Lutron®.    The first one…See More

V.P. Dim and Dimmer. Taking Control. The Sequel.

Here are some more dimmers that you may not know exist. All of them are by Lutron® although there are certainly more manufacturers of dimmers and controls. This dimmer is called the Maestro®. The little dots on the left are LED lights and indicate the light level. Like the Diva dimmer I introduced to you last week, it…See More

V.P.(formerly known as Vick’s Picks) Taking Control

Happy New Year! Let’s hope this year is happier for all of us. One way of being able to make that happen is by taking control.  The control I’m talking about here has to do with…you guessed it… lighting. Let me start by saying that not all light sources can be controlled (dimmed). So, I’m going to focus on those that can. (Otherwise, I’ll have to come up with a whole different topic.) Of all the sources of light, incandescent is the cheapest and easiest source to dim. If you have a standard…See More

Vick's Picks - LED news

Yesterday I took a webinar (online class) sponsored by LED’s Magazine. Although most of the content was geared towards LED luminaire and lamp manufacturers, as a lighting designer, I got some information that I thought would be interesting to other designers and consumers. So far, I have yet to sell LED fixtures to clients. The reason is, up until now, LED manufacturers of fixtures and lamps were able to make self declarations regarding their products. Meaning, any information put on their…See More

Vick's Picks - Romantic Lighting..

Whenever the holidays roll around I am reminded of one light source that seems to shine more brightly and in more places than at any other time of the year. .. candlelight. The original source of light, a flame, still draws and unites people together. Whether you are congregating, commiserating or dining, candlelight, and the warm glow that it produces, is unique and difficult to duplicate. Having said that, here are some fixtures that go the extra mile to try to reproduce the overall feeling…See More

Vick's Picks - Fragile

The holidays are just around the corner and nothing helps to transform a space like lighting. However, sometimes during the hustle and bustle we lose sight of what we are trying to achieve. I hope the following fixture helps to put a smile on your face and remind you not to take things so seriously. For Christmas one year, I bought the desk top version of this for my brother. He works at home and has it proudly displayed on a cabinet in his office. (Maybe that’s the only place his wife will let…See More

Vick's Picks - Bubbles

Last week, I told you I’dbe showcasing a chandelier that would remind you of…so here it is...What does it conjure up in your mind? Champagne, a bubble bath?? It definitely lets you know that lighting can go beyond just functional. It can also be fun. This fixture, aptly called “Bubbles” is by PLC Lighting and measures 34” wide by 94” in height. Speaking of fun, next weeks’ article will feature a lamp that coincides with the holidays. Plus it’ll bring a smile to folks young and old. Come on back…See More

Vick's Picks - Pendants

In the next few articles, I will be showcasing some interesting and unique ceiling mounted fixtures in the way of pendants and chandeliers. This first pendant is from Classic Lighting from the Harvest Moon collection. The bowl is made of natural alabaster stone and the branch is made of bronze with gold highlights. As a footnote, most alabaster stone is quarried in and comes to us from Spain. Like onyx, alabaster is translucent and diffuses the light which creates an inner glow that is truly…See More
